It's all down to whether the PCM monitors O2 content in exhaust. If it does, then blanking the EGR will throw a code and put your EML light on, which, as has

The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car's Remove and clean the EGR valve, and also block off the vacuum pipe which would stop it working completely but keep it closed.
